Geography[]

Yanome hasn't changed much geographically, apart from the growing cities demanding for hills to be flattened. Despite this urbanization, Yanome is still a very mountainous country with (presumably) widely untouched nature.

Culture[]

Yanome's culture had similarities to traditional Japanese culture in the past and continues to have them in aspects such as the school system with students being assigned titles such as "first year in middle school" or "senpai", and a school uniform similar to the seifuku usually seen in manga. Other similarities are the practice of "fan dancing", a naginata club and an abandoned Shinto shrine.

Put simply, present day Yanome is a representation of modern day Japan.

Housing[]

Housing in Present Yanome 1

Housing in present day Yanome is similar to housing in cities nowadays. While some people live apartments in multi-story buildings in the heart of the city, some prefer to live further outside in single-story houses. Some of these more rural houses still use tatami mats as flooring.

Chapter 149 - Outside of Minamoto Junior High School

Outside of Minamoto Junior High School

Minamoto Junior High School covers students grades seven to nine. Similar to Japanese middle schools, the grades are broken down into:

  • Grade 7, ages 12-13. Referred to as first years.
  • Grade 8, ages 13-14. Referred to as second years.
  • Grade 9, ages 14-15. Referred to as third years.

Just like in Japan as well, school years start in the spring.

Classes include the usual, like math, physical education, etc. Like the education system in Japan, students stay in one room and start the day with their homeroom teacher. Then for different subjects, different teachers come to their classroom to teach.

The school's uniform is a navy seifuku for the girls and a black gakuran for the boys. Their backpacks are a white shoulder-bag. Natural hair color and traditional gendered haircuts are recommended as seen by how Fushi is chided for the Nameless Boy's long white hair. During gym, all students wear a long white shirt and black or white shorts. Optionally, they can wear a white/green tracksuit jacket.

Amenities seen at the school include a library, track field, and storage shed.

Students can form their own clubs and each club has their own clubroom. Known clubs include the Handiwork/Occult Research Club and the Naginata Club.

From an archive in volume 14, the school has four precepts:

  1. Be as pure and proper as spring water.
  2. Be someone whose heart is as big as the sea.
  3. Be ever-changing like the river.
  4. Be as tranquil as a still pond.
