Pioran (ピオラン, Pioran?) was an old woman from Takunaha who was imprisoned in Yanome and enlisted as a shaman to perform the Spirit Bear ritual. She escaped from captivity with March, Parona, and Fushi, and acted as Fushi's mentor, teaching him how to properly read and write. Before she passed away, she chose to reborn as a white horse instead of following Fushi as a wandering spirit as does his other companions.

Background[]

Pioran had a lover, a home in Takunaha, and was known to have had grandchildren. Though she often spoke fondly of how she lived her life, the details remain largely unknown.[1]

At some point, she was imprisoned in Yanome, though it's never explicitly explained why beyond a rumor that she poisoned ten Yanome soldiers.

Appearance[]

Pioran had long white hair, tan skin, and was normally seen wearing a black headband and a long, ragged, hooded cloak. Due to her advanced age, her skin had noticeable warts, sun spots, and wrinkles, and she was often seen hunched over, making her only slightly taller than the average child. She would use a cane to walk and, on some occasions, for self-defense.

Interestingly, aside from the usual signs of aging, Pioran's appearance in her youth was not much different.

Personality[]

Pioran was an abrasive, brash, and easily irritable woman who struggled with the inconveniences of old age. She had no qualms with hitting people who bothered her or voicing her complaints about food, the weather, and the like, and acted very much like a grouchy old lady around strangers.

As a free-spirited individual, Pioran lived how she wanted, but knew her age made her a liability. She initially seemed content with being branded a criminal and imprisoned on Jananda, and claimed that she was "put back where she belong[ed]" in hopes that at least Fushi would escape.[2] Nevertheless, she was overjoyed to see him and was grateful to him for breaking her out.

Despite her usual attitude, she was capable of being civil and kind to those who helped her and those she was close to, and eventually formed a familial bond with Fushi. Considering him her own grandson, she stubbornly accompanied Fushi on his journey in the face of the ever looming danger of the Nokkers[3], and when her time came, she sacrificed her very nature to become a being that would be of use to the immortal.

Skills[]

  • Expert Fisher

Despite her old age, Pioran was very skilled at catching fish in the river with only her bare hands.

Trivia[]

  • Pioran was the first known character to intentionally reincarnate, though relied on the Beholder to do so.
